Montrose Environmental

Montrose Environmental completed a seven-day field campaign across 19 leases in British Columbia’s Peace River region to evaluate methane slip from natural gas fired engines. A total of 32 engines, ranging from 80 HP to 2,370 HP, were tested using a streamlined, field-ready protocol.

Measured exhaust methane concentrations ranged from 79 ppmv to 2,070 ppmv. Lean-burn engines averaged approximately twice the methane concentration of rich-burn units. The methodology achieved approximately 10 percent expanded uncertainty at 95 percent confidence, with a clear pathway to further reduce uncertainty and enable Tier 3 mass-rate reporting.

This study demonstrates that fleet-scale methane slip measurement can be delivered rapidly, repeatably, and with regulator-aligned confidence.
